Brian Hoggard:
Llancaiach Fawr - a case study

Brian will describe the finds from within the magnificent Llancaiach Fawr Manor in Wales including shoes, animal remains, a huge range of protection marks and other objects.  This building is a great example of a house which has been thoroughly protected and provides the opportunity to discuss many of the theories behind these practices.

Biography:

Brian originally became interested in archaeology through his curiosity about a number of sites on Bredon Hill in Worcestershire – a curiosity which eventually led to him writing a book all about it. Subsequently he studied for a degree in history while still reading voraciously about all things archaeological. His dissertation focused on folk beliefs and witchcraft which is where he came across Ralph Merrifield's Archaeology of Ritual and Magic (1987). At that point – back in 1999 – his research really escalated into a major project which I am still exploring today.   He has published many papers and articles, appeared on quite a few tv documentaries and runs www.apotropaios.co.uk
